Through the last 7 years of directing our ministry I have seen & been involved with over 150 adoptions which included four adoption displacement and helping so many families living in so much pain with their adoptions. It has to be the church that helps educate before adoption and to be there with support, resources & prayer once the child is placed in their forever home. Without it families can not make it! More children will be displaced and end up in in foster system. We now need more adoption ministries to step out of your comfort zone and start becoming more educated on how you can help support your adoptive/foster families through a support group, a list of local therapist who understand attachment disorder & RAD, a list of resources such as conferences, webinars & training classes for adoptive families, offer respite weekend & a prayer group. Don't just be a cheerleader for adoption-be the main key of support!

Your response to the NY Times article was spot on. My husband and I are adopting a young boy from Haiti, a child that was orphaned prior to the quake. We just returned from visiting Haiti and the orphanage our child is in. The orphanage provides excellent care, but is in no way a substitute for a family. I am in favor of family reunification whenever possible but international adoption needs to continue to be an option for the many children who don't have relatives to care for them and will end up on the streets at an early age.

I am a young male. I have a heart for the Fatherless and attended Summit 6. I agree that men are not stepping up but I feel like we have more hindrances then women. Because of our culture there is a lack of trust for men. I don't know if there is a way to help this but I just thought I would put that out there.

This is such a timely and Spirit led challenge. The fact that Men are not in the group of the "at risk" seems to have made us complacent. But any man who does not see tis need to help do not "Love God with all their heart and all their strength and all their mind"

It is time...before it is too late.

Wake up, you who sleep!!!

Great post! I recently finished reading a book by Jack Frost; "Experience Father's Embrace" that touched on the stronghold of a fatherless generation.

I believe that God is stirring up His warriors (men) and that through continual prayers, we will see the fruit of men truly defending the weak and standing up for the least of these!

Thank you guys for being a voice that continually speaks up for God's precious ones!

May He continue to unite the Body to do what it was intended to...receive the Father's love and then freely give it away!

Yes, what an exciting issue! The attention being brought by Christianity Today and the new Southern Baptist Denomination's Adoption Fund are 2 examples of how orphans are becoming a major national issue among the Church. Only the Church can rise up families both in the US and internationally to be the solution to the orphan crisis. As my friend Johnny Carr likes to say, "Man made orphanages for orphans. God made families for orphans."

It was a joy to spend a few hours with the Kjeldgaards yesterday. They are such an example of Christ's family in their home. Thank you for sharing about them. It is so wonderful to see those who want a quiver full and are seeking after those who are called to fill it.

Over the past 9 years we have adopted 6 older Russian orphans and are in the process of adopting 3 more now. While the hurt of these orphans is real, our Mighty God is the Great Healer and He has proven that He is able to bring healing.

We pray this article will not scare off people in whom God has placed a call to adopt - He has proven His faithfulness over and over in our lives. We pray His church will stay focused on Him and His word, not letting the wisdom of the world supercede the wisdom of the Creator.

I would hardly describe orphanages in Russia and Eastern Europe as "adequate."
Many children go hungry, are without adequate clothing and lack medical care. Not to mention the emotional and physical abuse.

I think it's dangerous to promote a culture of censoring doubts like Mr. Robertson's. I don't agree with him, but I cannot teach my two sons with significant special needs that the healthy response when you hear someone say something fearful, insensitive, or ignorant about you, your race, your disability, or your adoption is to stop them from talking, to remove their right to their expression. i hope my sons can help love people through their fears and ignorance and prejudice, engage in dialogue when appropriate, and love themselves, even if it means they lose much. It's what their Savior did.

I think, as often as I find myself opposed to what Pat Robertson says, that in this instance, he's saying the things that I was telling God I was afraid of BEFORE we adopted our two boys with significant special needs from China. In that place of blindly leaping towards the unknown--unknown children, foreign land, unknown needs--I was asking God, "Where are You? Are You sovereign? What if this feels unsafe or turns out to be terrible? Are You still present in that?" And of course He is present and sovereign, and if I hadn't asked those questions or laid out that fear, then I would have been letting the sentimental gush of wanting motherhood and wanting to "rescue" children cloud honesty. Mr. Robertson is voicing the "before adoption" fears--and Mrs. Meeuwsen is voicing, in faith, that as it happens, God IS sovereign, whether adoption is "easy" or not. And we do orphans and adoption just as much of a disservice if we're afraid to let people voice their own fears and doubts. If we are not afraid, if we trust that God is sovereign, then we can be free enough to let our neighbors communicate honestly and openly about their fears, no matter what damage we think may come, and then we can love them through it, just as much as we would want our neighbor love us when we have an adoption that is disrupting, turning into a story of institutionalization, or just downright everyday hard. (He should have known better, to phrase it in a way that was more accessible and less plain closed-minded, but his fear is not a stranger to adoption.) And better to not feel the pressure to hide that discussion by removing a link or commentary, because I'd rather talk about it with my sons in our home BEFORE they hear those fears thrown at them in the grocery store from strangers or at family reunions.

In that place of blindly leaping towards the unknown–unknown children, foreign land, unknown needs–I was asking God, “Where are You? Are You sovereign? What if this feels unsafe or turns out to be terrible? Are You still present in that?” And of course He is present and sovereign, and if I hadn’t asked those questions or laid out that fear, then I would have been letting the sentimental gush of wanting motherhood and wanting to “rescue” children cloud honesty. Mr. Robertson is voicing the “before adoption” fears–and Mrs. Meeuwsen is voicing, in faith, that as it happens, God IS sovereign, whether adoption is “easy” or not. And we do orphans and adoption just as much of a disservice if we’re afraid to let people voice their own fears and doubts. (He should have known better, to phrase it in a way that was more accessible and less plain closed-minded, but his fear is not a stranger to adoption.) And better to not feel the pressure to hide that discussion by removing a link or commentary, because I’d rather talk about it with my sons in our home BEFORE they hear those fears thrown at them in the grocery store from strangers or at family reunions.

Yea, that pretty much made me sick. I almost stopped watching after he said adoption was fine, IF you got the "right" child. HUH? What is the RIGHT child? THEN to go on and basically say the reason we SHOULDN'T adopt is because the kids have gone through so much emotional pain. What backwards thinking is THAT?

Sir- i am sorry for your thoughts, but they are wrong. I do not care about what you say about health effects, if u had a child with brain problems, would you just leave them on the street? I KNOW that is not what God would tell you to do. I think of adopting as the same thing, if my baby had a problem, i would work with them to fix it, get surgeries, anything! But i would not just leave them at the orphanage because they have a small problem! Never! I think you should go back, and rethink them!

Mr. Robertson, tell me how we're supposed to process Scripture that undeniably shows God heart for the orphan. Or His heart for you and me as we were orphaned spiritually. Do you not think that our Father thought the same thing when He adopted us through Christ? We are far more trouble than any child that we adopt. And God still said 'yes, I will send my son to die for you.' So... now we have a choice ... do we follow God's heart or do we follow our own?

Job 24:9 "They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor."

Rpbertson is wrong. Adoption is about helping children in need, not about meeting a demand for one's ideal child. However...

You use the word "orphan" far too liberally. 90% of children living in orphanages worldwide are NOT orphans but have at least one living parent who hopes to reunite their family, as was the case with the two children Madonna adopted. Adoption of such children is a SIN, not a blessing!

Christian love and faith are being used by the mega billion dollar adoption industry to promote the redistribution of children FOR PROFIT! Do not be fooled by these demon child traffickers and baby brokers.

Jesus threw out the money lenders and supported ALL with love, including widows (which in those days meant any single mother.) Jesus is about LOVE and kindness, not exploiting people in crisis. Taking children from their homes does nothing to improve the condition of their family, their village or nation. In fact it take their future. Donate instead to places such as Christian Children's Fund which helps families in poverty.

Read: http://evangelicalarminians.org/jackson.adoption.the-inheritance-of-a-son

God doesn't arbitrarily adopt particular humans to join his family. Rather, He promises believers an inheritance as His sons in Christ Jesus.

Adoption is a standing that believers have as sons in Christ Jesus. The Pauline concept of adoption is best understood as the position of a believer. It is not an action.

"None of the purported instances of adoption elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible [he quotes scripture references for Moses, Esther etc.] were real adoptions in the legal sense, rabbis contended--and most took place in locations outside of formal Jewish rule. And even if these could be regarded as legal adoptions per Roman law, no formal law of adoption was prescribed in the Torah to make this practice normative for the Jewish community." John Witte Jrs book "The Sins of the Fathers: Law of Illegitimacy and Theology Reconsidered."

As a pastor and as a father of three adopted children I would love to spend some time with Rev. Robertson. I have no dark intentions but surely his responses represent the thinking of someone who simply has not spent time clearly thinking and praying about what adoption means. Not all of our three children are perfect and we've spent years in counseling. Would you love your biological children less if they had birth defects or brain damage? If your children wandered from the way and left you grandchildren to raise with AIDS and post traumatic stress from their abuse, would you turn them away? Adoption carries the same risks as the rest of life and so we deal with whatever we are given. In the end, are we not the people who have been commanded, by God, to care for the widows and orphans? How can we go wrong by being obedient?

As a mama to one precious, severely brain damaged, former orphan from Ethiopia, Pat’s comments caused such emotions to stir within me! It made me angry as he clearly was set in his opinions and wouldn’t really listen to her attempt to speak truth. I was also so unbelievably sad at his ignorance- Abe is absolutely the biggest gift our family has received. Sure it is “hard” as he doesn’t walk or talk, but he demonstrates love with truly one of the best smiles on the planet! He teaches us daily and as the mother said with the two from Uganda, I get to die to self over and over as I GET to care for this child. I am the most blessed woman on the planet that He chose us to parent Abe, my 5 other kiddos are blessed as well! Pat simply missed the point here. It isn’t about us, it is all about Him and displaying His glory for the world to see.
We were never promised easy, in fact we were told to follow Him, would come with considerable “cost”! So thankful He saw fit to call us to the amazing world of International Adoption.

Well, Pat, couldn't we say the same about parenting in general? Or even marriage? "It can be a blessing if you get the right"...child, spouse, etc. Give me a break. You are completely leaving God and HIS hand, HIS love for adoption out of this. As an adoptive mother of four, soon to be five, I am sickened by these statements. The attack on adoption continues to become hotter and heavier. We must, as Christians, fix our eyes upon JESUS and move forward in His calling to adopt without fear. He equips us to walk through what He calls us to do!!

I believe the views he expressed are common among many, believers and non-believers alike. This fear of the unknown, of the possibilities, paralyzes many to inaction. May we all continue to seek His will, trust Him, and respond to His calling on our lives. I pray that the Lord will continue to mobilize His people for the fatherless and mold all of our hearts to be more like His.

I've had the privilege of traveling with Terry to the Ukraine. What an incredible woman who speaks the truth about God's heart for orphans. I'm sorry Mr. Robertson, but your views on adoption and abused children are not Biblical. It's a good thing God didn't say the same thing about you when he adopted you as His son. You have been forgiven much, go and do likewise.

Mr. Pat Robertson. I want you to go home tonight, read your bible, pray, and listen again to what you spoke on your show that is broadcasted throughout the world.

I also would like to say to you that I am very glad it was you speaking and not my Lord that way. I am so very glad that He decided to adopt me with all my brain damage and discipline problems, and attachment problems, and constant failures. I am so glad that He never gave up on me and never will. Jesus Christ counted the cost when He decided to adopt you and me and with all our flaws, He still said "Yes" to us.

You say adoption is a trend, well, let's hope it is much more than just a trend, let's hope that it remains to be the central focus of our Christian lives. You had many adopted children watching this show and above all you certainly owe them an apology and you need to pray that your words will not stick with them. That they are being compared to a pound puppy, have brain damage, and may be demonic.

Praying for you, Deanne

Pat Robertson doesn't have a clue! I am an adoptive mother, and also a special-needs teacher. Yes, my son can be very difficult - he's acting out a lot of power and control issues, consistent with Reactive Attachment Disorder. But he's OUR SON - difficult or not! The students I work with all "happen" to be natural-born within their families, and live with far more drastic difficulties than my son's. So should Pat Robertson then say, "Parenthood can be wonderful IF the right child is born to you"? Shame on him!

I understand what he was trying to get at: yes, you can be getting a kid with "baggage", and some families without a good agency & good education ahead of time can feel overwhelmed - I've had plenty of overwhelmed moments & we had FANTASTIC support and education! BUT Terry truly understand unconditional love - and the kind of love Jesus gives US every day! And she's right! What these poor babies & children have suffered means they need us EVEN MORE! Thank God someone gets it...

Unfortunatly, this is the reality of what we face as adoption advocates. Too many careless words being given equal weight beside God's Word and heart for the orphan. Thanks for sharing it here.

On the last day He will say to those on His right, "whatever you did to the least of these, you did to Me.

Orphans belong, without doubt, to the least of us. Especially orphans of aids, war and strife.
Every one of us has to answer to our conscience and to God. May we make the right decisions.

As a mama to one precious, severely brain damaged, former orphan from Ethiopia, Pat's comments caused such emotions to stir within me! It made me angry as he clearly was set in his opinions and wouldn't really listen to her attempt to speak truth. I was also so unbelievably sad at his ignorance- Abe is absolutely the biggest gift our family has received. Sure it is "hard" as he doesn't walk or talk, but he demonstrates love with truly one of the best smiles on the planet! He teaches us daily and as the mother said with the two from Uganda, I get to die to self over and over as I GET to care for this child. I am the most blessed woman on the planet that He chose us to parent Abe, my 5 other kiddos are blessed as well! Pat simply missed the point here. It isn't about us, it is all about Him and displaying His glory for the world to see.
We were never promised easy, in fact we were told to follow Him, would come with considerable "cost"! So thankful He saw fit to call us to the amazing world of International Adoption.

I just posted about this the other day on my blog http://4blessed.blogspot.com/2010/05/reality-of-adoption.html.
Pat sure has a way with words doesn't he? It's amazing the man is still on TV. Thank you God that there was someone there that could speak truth in love with him.
These children deserve love and care...ALL of them.
Thank you for posting this.

How is a child considered "Special Needs" to recieve tax credit, as mentioned is "eligible" in the new tax law of 2001 in article? Would it mean that the child is on adoption subsidy? have a risk agreement in place or??

This is why we adopt older kids, as well as having adopted 4 as babies (we currently have 12 altogether). The teens can be amazing kids, and it's so rewarding to know that an older kid, even 17 or 18, has a home and a family to support her!

Any indications on if they will extend this beyond 2011. We are just getting started, so the likelihood of finalizing before 12-31-2011 is pretty slim. Is there a chance this will get extended, or will it be allowed to sunset?

Thank you for this article. One thing I would mention that while the wait times for non-special needs children is 4 years or more. The wait for Special needs children is not long depending upon the child you are willing to bring home. Most special needs china adoptions can be done within one year from the start of your paperwork to meeting and adopting your child.

Will there be new instructions soon for form 8839? I just checked irs.gov, and the form is unchanged. I am a little confused about the the last bullet point of the 'refundable' credit. We have a credit 'carryforward' from our 2007 adoption, and I'm not sure if this is saying that we could receive the remaining bulk of our credit all at once this year? Or do we just keep 'carrying forward' to next year if we don't use the credit up?

Please allow this legislation to pass. It is absolutely crazy not to let these children have a hope and a future with loving, adoptive families. I understand the concerns related to newly orphaned children, but these orphans who were already established pre-earthquake should be allowed to become adopted. And in their place, these newly orphaned children will have a place to go in the meantime. It is a win-win situation for everyone! I am praying fervently for this to happen. Please have compassion for these innocent children who go to bed hungry everyday and have nothing to call there own, most of all a family of their own.
Thank you, Tiffany

I agree whole-heartedly! And there is something we can do. Contact your congressmen and ask them to support HR-4603, which is currently in the House Judiciary Committee. This bill will allow for pre-quake orphans who have been proven eligible for intercountry adoption to qualify for the Humanitarian Parole program, regardless of when their adoptions were started. This could make a tremendous difference in the lives of these children. They have already been proven as orphans, and have no hope of growing up in a family if they stay in Haiti. This is an opportunity for Americans to make a difference. Not everyone can (or should) bring a child into their home, but every one can contact their congressmen.

Wow, there is a lot of explaining away the behavior of the Haiti 10. But I wonder if we looked at this through another lens, what we would think....WWJD? Would he have taken the 33 children, or instead tried to help the families...I think they were trying to take some of those children out to then make money off them by adopting them out. Shame on them. And then there is the comment about the parents giving their children to the Haiti 10. Well yes, when they were told their kids would be living close by in the DR, to be educated and cared for, where they could visit them...what would you have done? Sadly, that was not the truth...there was no school, or even an orphanage.
So let's not equate this to human trafficking...lets equate this to further traumatizing the children and their parents, on top of the trauma of the earthquake. Still a horrible thing to do to those children and parents.
Under the WWJD lens, nothing these people did was good...to try and spin it any other way is wrong.

You know, you can try to spin these crimes any way you want to justify the unjustifiable, but let me just make one comment about #4 - what these fake missionaries did might not be the "worst thing happening in Haiti" - but it is certainly the worst thing happening to THOSE 33 CHILDREN stolen from their parents by the Haiti 10!!!

Why do you care more about these criminal Baptists (that even you admit were "wrong" and "unwise") than the families they tore apart? How is that part of God's plan?

I recently returned from PaP. I am not sure any one person can totally be able to convey the state of the whole city or the country for that matter. I was involved in many humanitarian distributions all over PaP, Carrefour, and Leogane. I saw destruction, smelled death, walked in many tent cities, saw people selling in the markets, saw people caring for people, witnessed many gatherings of people in prayer, aide workers trying to help where-ever possible and people living in the streets at night. A major catastrophe has occurred! But, there is lots of good happening, God is there! Yes, there are many heart wrenching things, but do not lose sight of the good aspects too. Pray for the people, the countries government, and the people deeply invested in helping Haiti.

We are hoping and praying fervantly for this Hope Act to pass. We long to see the true-pre-quake orphans given a hope and a future through caring, approved families. We support this act 100%! We are parents to two internationally adopted children. Our daughter, Libby, was adopted from China at 9 months of age. She is now 4. Our daughter, Gracie, was adopted from Ethiopia at 4 1/2 months of age. She is now 1. Gracie was severely malnourished and would have died without the care we were able to give her. Libby, even though only 9 months when adopted, already had some attachment issues that had to be conquered by love. I can only imagine that the orphans in Haiti have far greater needs now after such an awful earthquake - so many losses, fears.... Love must win for these children. Ask any of these orphans what it is the need/want and they will tell you - a FAMILY of their own. Let's give these little ones just that!

Thank you!

Please allow this legislation to pass! There is absolutely no logical sane reason for leaving the orphans in Haiti when there are home study ready families that are willing and able to care for these desperate and dying little ones. Please do the right thing in the best interest of these precious children. We pray that there are no more lives needlessly lost.

Thank you for continuing to act on behalf of those that have no other hope,

We are happy to see your strong advocacy for the children of Haiti and around the world. Our group consists of families that have all adopted internationally from various countries, but mainly Guatemala. Many of these families are ready and eager to provide a loving home for a children from Haiti; whether temporarily or permanently. Please let us know what we can do to be of service to the children of Haiti. Your four points are exactly what we have been saying for weeks now. Once children are identified as positively orphaned, it is in their best interest to be united with a family. We hope we have the opportunity to be part of something great with the children of Haiti. Please keep us informed of developments in the progress of a plan that would allow children of Haiti a future.

Lord, I haven't prayed as much as I could for Haiti. One or two prayers is not going to be enough. Lord please forgive me for not praying more for Haiti.
Please help me to pray more for Haiti.

Our ministry has partnered with Bethany Christian Service this year and has already began Safe Families in St. Louis, Missouri.
We see such a hug need in our area and already seeing how fast this can grow. We met Safe Families at the last Summit and were determined to start it right away. Still in the stages of finding our safe homes in our church, then training and then off to helping those who need help.

My husband and I would love to care for Haitian orphans in our home here in southwest Virginia. We have a good sized home and 7+ acres, our five children are just out of the home with our youngest in college. Providing for orphans has always our desire. We would especially enjoy a sibling grouping. If we should contact someone about this, how can we go about doing it. We will be more than willing to do what it takes. Please let us know.

Thank you for posting this. As a prospective adoptive mom who recently found herself in the middle of a very unethical adoption situation, I have learned that these things need to be talked about more in the adoption community. The people of Haiti, both children and adults, are constantly in our prayers.

I am the wife of a very loving Doctor, who gives charitably to those in need at our Keefe Clinic practice. We have been married for 14 years, and together for 15 years...and would happily welcome the life-long committment of loving and caring for a child in need from Haiti. We don't take this decision lightly, and would fly where ever need be, to start this process. We have a lovely big home just outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Please let us know if we can offer a little one in new home and family.

Most any time the term "orphan" is used by government or NGOs, it refers to a child who has lost one or both parents to death. As a rough estimate, approximately 10 percent of children labeled "orphan" have lost both parents.

As an adoptive father, I would highly recommend reading the following blog for some thoughts on folks who are volunteering to adopt or take care of Haitian orphans - folks who probably hae the best of hearts and the best of intentions, but who may need to really step back and seek God on this life-changing decision:

"Responding to the Haiti Crisis (Part 1 of 3): The Question of Adoption" (http://hopefororphansblog.com/2010/01/20/haiti-crisis_part1/)

Many families are asking how they can learn more about the possibility of taking in Haitian orphans. At this point, the U.S. government has not yet determined if or to what extent it will issue broad "humanitarian parole" provisions allowing a large number of Haitian orphans to enter the U.S. Furthermore, if large-scale entry is allowed, it is currently unknown precisely what governmental mechanisms would be used to place the children in care--most likely temporary care first, and then longer term and/or permanent/adoptive care.

It is likely the Federal government would rely heavily upon state government social services agencies--particularly those that currently oversee state foster systems. In this scenario, states would likely turn first to individuals that have already been approved by them to care for foster children and also to existing foster care facilities like current group homes . Very likely, however, if more than a modest number of Haitian orphans entered the country, states would look to rapidly expand capacity--possibly with an expedited approval process for foster families and facilities. Almost certainly, a number of Federal agencies would also be heavily involved with this process--including the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement and Children's Bureau. These agencies may opt to do some of their work through large national organizations in addition to states.

At this point, as heartening as it is to see the tremendous willingness of American families to open their homes to Haitian orphans, it is best for interested individuals to wait until additional details are known about whether large numbers of Haitian orphans will be entering the U.S., and what the designated process would be for approving homes to receive them.
